I ♥ NY

Weekends in the City

If your child is like Dubbers, he or she has a pretty demanding routine Monday through Friday.  While weekends provide most people a break from work, commitments and deadlines, they can actually bring more anxiety to parents of a child with special needs.  Lack of a schedule or routine can backfire and make these two days much more stressful then a typical work day.

My husband and I try and come up with a list of places to visit, activities or playdates to schedule at the beginning of each season.  Then when we come upon a Saturday or Sunday with no set plans, we have a list to fall back on.  Our finds featured in these Weekends in the City posts are meant to provide ideas and inspiration for activities and places to visit in or around NYC.

Dubbers’ Top 10 Things to Miss about NYC

Dubbers was born and raised in Manhattan, and while we are very excited about what the future holds in Dallas, this move will no doubt be bittersweet.  These past five years with Dubbers have certainly allowed us to acknowledge and appreciate New York City through...

Big Umbrella Festival

If you are in New York City and have the chance, definitely check out Lincoln Center’s Big Umbrella Festival.  It kicked off last weekend and runs through May 6th, in support of Autism Awareness month.  This festival is the world’s first month-long festival dedicated...

Stepping Stones Museum for Children

January of each year is when Phil and I come up with a list of places to visit or things to do, when we do not otherwise have plans. This can be especially important in the winter months to escape the unavoidable “cabin fever” when outside temperatures are below...

Victorian Gardens

Dubbers and I had the afternoon to ourselves a few weekends ago, so I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and go to an old favorite, Central Park.  In the back of my mind I was hoping to stumble upon an amusement park previously unknown to me (I had...

A La Mode

After M&M's (or chocolate in general) ice cream is Dubbers' favorite treat. His favorite place to go for ice cream is the cutest family-run shoppe, A La Mode. Not only does it have the most delicious and unique flavors, but all of their ice cream is nut-free,...

Central Park Rowboats

I have lived in New York City for 14 years now and never did I have the desire to get on one of the rowboats in Central Park.  Well, never say never!  We are taking Dubbers to Disney World and I am trying to think of anything and everything to prepare him for this...

SNACK Swim

Dubbers loves the water!  From the bathtub, to sprinklers at the city playgrounds, to the pool, he has always enjoyed splashing and getting wet!  We tried private swim lessons the summer he turned 3 with a company that had instructors available at various indoor pools...

The Train

Not every experience is a "success"; however, the more challenging experiences are just as important, if not more.  I had planned on not writing a post about this particular experience, but having some time to reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly, I think is...

NY Transit Museum

We finally took Dubbers to the NY Transit Museum located in Brooklyn over his birthday weekend. While Dubbers has actually never been on a real subway, he is very familiar with them thanks to the book, Subway, and his motorized toy subway trains. It was a quick...

New York Auto Show

A few weekends ago, we ventured across town to the New York International Auto Show, held at the Javits Center.  Dubbers loves all things “auto,” from playing with his toy cars and trucks, to riding in taxis, to his favorite song, Wheels on the Bus.  It only seemed...
